Joyce, being an artist herself, thought there should be a local show for local artists. Others agreed. The Artists’ Alpine Holiday began that year, and the rest is history. The Association has presented a judged art show, the Artists’ Alpine Holiday, each year since that time. The show is open to any artist’s work, and over the years it has attracted artists from many states, but most of those contributing are from Colorado and surrounding states. It is one of the oldest juried art shows in Colorado and runs for nine days each August. Almost 300 artists enter the Artists’ Alpine Holiday each year bringing over 400 works of art, including sculpture and photography, and there is a special category for students. The show is generally attended by close to 2,000 visitors from foreign countries and more than 30 states. Approximately 10% or more of the art is sold during the show’s run each year. Proceeds from percentage of sales, as well as, monies received from entry fees, memberships, and cash donations, are used to support ongoing shows, including the awarding of prizes and payment of the show’s judge. All of those involved in the planning and operation of shows are volunteers – including the officers and committee chairpersons. The Association encourages student artists and offers scholarships to deserving seniors in Ouray and Ridgway schools. Photos provided by the Ouray Historical Society. General information on Joyce Jorgensen from Don Paulson. Mildred Baker Award Since 1996 a number of quality art works have been gifted to the local community via this award and can be seen in various public locations (libraries and courthouse) in Ridgway and Ouray. An Award of Merit based on association with the San Juans and Ouray region. Mildred Baker (1908-1996), originally of Holton, Kansas, was a high school English teacher who fell in love with Ouray and the San Juan’s in the late 1950s. For some years she was the owner of The Manor on 2nd Street which was a derelict structure she purchased at tax auction. She and her youngest son, Dan, completely restored the structure. Mildred summered in Ouray with some of her children and her husband, G.W. Baker, during the 1960s and 70s. During these years she operated The Manor as a rooming house that took in some of the overflow from area motels. When she retired she moved to Ouray permanently. She was active and well known in the local community and volunteered at the visitor center, the Ouray County Arts Council, and various other organizations. When she passed away in 1996, her children gave funds to the Ouray Arts Council for the Mildred Baker Purchase Award in honor on their mother. Since 1996 a number of quality art works have been gifted to the local community via this award and can be seen in various public locations (libraries and courthouse) in Ridgway and Ouray. Mildred’s son, Steve of Montrose, annually judges the award winning pieces. Some years no purchase award is made but a Mildred Baker Award of Merit and a Student Achievement award are commonly designated. Eligibility criteria for the Mildred Baker awards emphasize association with the San Juans and Ouray region. 2015 Mildred Baker Purchase Award Last Day of Summer ~ Natalie Heller Past Winners 2000 Pleasant Valley Ridgway by Buzz Zatterstrom Historic Homes of Ouray by Cheryl St. John 2001 Along the River by Liz Thiele 2002 America the Beautiful by Carol Hopper 2003 Mt Sneffels by Portia Griefengerg 2004 Black Canyon by Beverly C.
